From the National's website:
"Go backstage at Britain’s largest theatre complex and explore the fascinating history of this iconic building.

Led by experienced guides, visit the unseen parts of the three auditoriums, backstage areas and theatre workshops, where sets and props are created.

South London Press "From the moment the tour starts you know you are in a special place... A backstage tour could leave you with a serious theatre-going habit."

Every year more than 25,000 people from all over the world enjoy the unique experience of a backstage tour at the National – and they all come away with a lasting impression:
‘A one-of-a-kind opportunity to view the inner workings of an international treasure, the National Theatre.’"

I recommend doing the Backstage tour very very highly.

There are 3 backstage tours running on Monday 2 May 2011 - at 10.30am, 12.15pm, and 5.15pm.

Tickets (full price) cost £7.50 and tickets (students) cost £6.50.

Each tour lasts about 1hr 15mins.

All tours bookers receive 25% off in the Espresso Bar and 15% off in the NT Bookshop.

Not only are we doing a backstage tour prior seeing a matinée later this month, but I have been encouraging my daughter to check out the virtual tours at the National Theatre's website before we go. I've already followed the director's online video tour around the complex once myself. Next time I must tear myself away from him to explore some of the specialist areas in more detail. I think this sort of background preparation can only enhance the entire experience – a reminder that what we see on the stage is only the tip of a very large iceberg, the culmination of a vast wealth of creative talent. :-)

You are absolutely right. Both the real and the virtual backstage tours are excellent and first rate.

Exactly, couldn't agree more!
