The Passion of Jesus, Trafalgar Square, Good Friday

I am strongly recommending this as I saw this last year and it blew me away. I went along for the first performance and I enjoyed it so much that I blew out a pre-booked film to stay on for the second performance.

I will be going to see it again tomorrow.

Cut and pasted from the official website:

The Passion of Jesus will be performed free of charge in Trafalgar Square tomorrow on Good Friday at 12.15pm and 3pm. The Passion is a 90 minute Open Air Play and tells the story of Jesus from his entry into Jerusalem to the time when He rises again.

This is my reaction to a previous performance (this was originally posted in April 2012):

Raks's Reaction

To cut to the chase, I thought this was excellent. I went along to the noon performance, and enjoyed it immensely, and was completely blown away by it. As a result, I decided to blow out the film I had planned to see (and booked!) to stay on for the 3.15pm performance. Both times I was seated towards the front, right on the gangway, so that I was up close and personal to the action at the front, as well as being literally right in the thick of the action when the actors used the gangways (which they used often!).

The play told the whole story of the last few days of Jesus's life, starting from his entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, where he was welcomed by the people waving palm leaves. It ended with Jesus having Risen again, and having shown himself to Mary and his disciples, taking his leave of them for the last time.

As they were using the gangways a great deal, and actors were entering from all around the Square and marching/walking onto the stage at the front, the action was happening all around you, and you really felt like you were part of the performance. It was very engaging. And it was an immersive theatre experience - I love immersive theatre!

If it returns next year, I am recommending that everyone who missed it this year (and also in 2010 and 2011 when it was also on) to prioritise this and come along!

Highly highly recommended.

Below I have TRIED to give a flavour of the action, using official images.

You really felt a part of the action as the soldiers marched straight past you, within touching distance.

Roman Soldier "Come on, come on, get a move on! We haven't got all bloody day!"
They made someone from the audience carry the cross for a part of the way (a plant) and his wife ran after them shouting that she wanted him back!

To watch Jesus carrying the cross right through the crowds, and then being nailed to it by the Roman soldiers, was excruciating. But it brought home to you the agony of being crucified, and the reality of what Jesus went through to redeem us.
