Cut and pasted from the Metro:
Today Doctor Who star Matt Smith carried the Olympic torch, echoing the plot of a 2006 episode of the show.
Matt Smith is normally wielding a sonic screwdriver, but today the Doctor Who star carried the Olympic torch. Smith, who plays the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC series, carried the torch in Cardiff early Saturday morning as it made its way to Swansea.
Speaking of the announcement, he said:
'To carry the torch is an honour, one I thought I'd never get, I'm very excited!'
The Doctor carrying the Olympic torch takes on an extra significance given that the show seems to have predicted the event, with David Tennant's Tenth Doctor carrying the flame during series two episode Fear Her. In the programme the Doctor tackles the disappearance of several local children ahead of the opening ceremony of the London 2012 games from Dame Kelly Holmes Close. The episode culminates with a torch-bearer staggering before he makes it to the Olympic Stadium, with the Doctor stepping in to carry the torch and light the Olympic flame.
