Today I saw Twelfth Night in Hindi by The Company Theatre.

This really was "Shakespeare goes Bollywood"! Music and dance are always an integral part of any Twelfth Night but this production really took it to the next level! It was Twelfth Night, the Musical, Bollywood style!

Bollywood is not at all my thing, and this way of playing Shakespeare, with a completely different style of acting Shakespeare to the one I am used to, and the style of acting that is, quite frankly, my personal preference, would not normally be my cup of tea. And it rained the whole way through. And I was a groundling in the pit. And I had left my beloved red waterproof jacket at home. So by the end of the production, I was soaked to the skin, and freezing cold.

But ...

The production totally won me over as it played along, and by the end I really loved it, and was clapping and dancing along with the rest of the audience. To be honest, you would have to be pretty hard-hearted not to be swept along by the sheer energy, joy and exuberance of this production. The colours, the music, the singing, the comedy, the passion, just everything about it. As I said, the style of acting is not what I am used to and goes against my own personal preference, but the actors won me around because they were 100% committed to that style of playing.

I also loved the light touches of genius. I loved the way that the duel between Sebastian and Sir Andrew was a singoff in true Indian fashion. I liked the female Feste which I thought worked really well. And I liked Sebastian trying to big up his role!

All in all, a really enjoyable evening, despite the incessant and unrelenting rain.

2 down, 8 to go - Bring it on!
