Happy Valentines Day - To all the Singles!

Being the bitter and twisted old crone that I am (!), I am not going to do a traditional (hearts and flowers) Valentines Day post. I am going to do a more realistic post. I positively hate Valentines Day because the only time I have ever got a card or a gift was the 10 years I was with my husband. The rest of the time, nada. Today, I am expecting a big fat zero! I decided to do a post for all of us Singles out there who are spending Valentines Day on our own.

One of my favourite music artists, who I discovered only last year, is James Blunt. I first went to see James live in concert on Monday 28 February 2011 at the Hammersmith Apollo. In preparation for the live gig, I had ordered his new CD and was sat on a very busy commuter train one morning listening to the album through my headphones. This track - So Far Gone - came on. It destroyed me. I connected so much with the situation that James was describing and was deeply moved by the beauty and poetry of the lyrics which just spoke to me. I broke down. This was a full 5 years after my husband decided to leave me. So it shows the power of the lyrics and the song to evoke that reaction in me so many years after the event. So, here are the lyrics, reproduced in full, with the key lines that speak to me highlighted in bold. It is dedicated to everyone who does not have a Valentine on Valentine's Day - we should stick together!

So Far Gone, by James Blunt

Tell me the wars you're fighting
Behind the smile you're hiding
All of the things I know you want to say

We tried our best to find us
But there are no lights to guide us
I can't sleep beside a stranger now

Piece by piece we fall apart
With every beat slows down my heart

chorus:
So I'll just say what you won't say
and I'll take the blame, if its for your sake
No turning back on what you can't save
So far gone
Yeah, we're so far gone

I've tried hard to remember
This prison cell used to be a shelter
Now we're just looking for the best way out
And I can't fight you anymore
You're already one foot out the door

chorus:
So I'll just say what you won't say
and I'll take the blame, if its for your sake
No turning back on what you can't save
So far gone,
Yeah, we're so far gone

And this is the face of letting go
And these are the things we already know

chorus:
So I'll just say what you won't say
and I'll take the blame, if its for your sake
No turning back on what you can't save

So I'll just say what you won't say
and I'll take the blame, if its for your sake (for your sake)
No turning back on what you can't save
So far gone,
Yeah, we're so far gone
Yeah, we're so far gone

So I'll just say what you won't say
