I wanted a Benedict image on the com. I always end up back at Stuart or Third Star. This is a Third Star image which illustrates the adage "A picture is worth a thousand words" to perfection and is an image that I have not run before. As with a lot of Third Star images, it simply takes my breath away:

Cut and pasted from Wikipedia:
The adage "A picture is worth a thousand words" refers to the notion that a complex idea can be conveyed with just a single still image.

I agree with this adage. However, I find it quite interesting to put the words down. I had started something based on a photo shoot from Benedict in Marie Claire, to explore how an image could lead to a story.
I never managed to finish this little project, sadly but it was rather amusing to see how a single image can inspire words, how a portrait could tell a story. And in the end I questioned myself: who did I see on the picture? Was it really Benedict C.? Or was it the character I created?

Firstly, finish the project! Plenty of people would be interested!

Portraits do tell stories. As with theatre or film too, the story is also shaped by the listener/viewer/audience member. Every single person brings their own baggage into the room and they interpret the story through the baggage that they bring to bear on it.

As far as who were you seeing - your creation or Benedict? I assume your creation. But to add another layer of complexity into the mix, when Benedict was photographed for the shoot you mention, I don't think he is playing himself at all; he is playing a character. Who knows what character he has invented in his head.

So in the Marie Claire photoshoot you have:
- Benedict
- the character that Benedict is playing, the one that he has invented, and
- the character that YOU have created for Benedict to play.
Interesting!

As for me, this is the still image that spoke to me last year:

Finally, did you get my PM? LJ emails appear to be playing up!
