Cross-posted from my own LJ, a dialogue-free fanvid made from the famous Russian series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Sherlock_Holmes_and_Dr._Watson

With clips from the stories covering The Final Problem and The Empty House (plus others illustrating Watson's memories), it's an endearing portrayal. And features possibly the scariest looking Moriarty ever!

On the day BBC Sherlock faces his nemesis for what could be the final confrontation (although we hope not!) it seems suitable viewing...

captivebird. Thank you so much for this! It is the first I have seen of the very famous and very popular Russian series and so it was great to see it. And YES - Moriarty looks VERY scary!

The three most affectionately produced series, all filmed during the Soviet era for Russian television (Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, and The Twentieth Century Approaches) were made with every effort of fidelity to canon Conan Doyle, with the leads played by first class actors.

They are all available – with dodgy English subtitles. But if you know the stories well that doesn't detract too much from the general enjoyment. :-)

Thank you for all the information.

And I promise I will get onto them at some stage.

It is just that I have a whole stack of DVDs, and things on SkyPlus, which I really need to get onto first! (don't tell anyone else this but I have still not seen a single episode of the Basil Rathbone series, although I acquired the complete collection a year ago, when Steven and Mark both said that those were their favourite adaptations!).

I must've seen some of the Rathbone films as a youngster, but not by choice and can't remember any particulars. I bought the Rathbone set at least two years ago, but confess that I only watched the first of them last Sunday afternoon as part preparation for The Reichenbach Fall. Brief thoughts about it on my journal coming up soon...

Brilliant re upcoming review.

I want to watch the updated ones re WWII and Hitler, the ones that Steven and Mark always say inspired them.
