There was an interesting article in today's Evening Standard on the Met Police's use of the power of stop and search.

Cut and pasted from the Evening Standard website:

Police in London will dramatically reduce the number of random stop and searches in an effort to improve relations with black people and ethnic minority communities.

Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe has ordered a radical overhaul of the policy amid fears the force is alienating many Londoners.

Fierce debate has raged for years over the success of stop and search in London. Critics say it has alienated huge swathes of young people in ethnic minority communities. But senior police officers - as well as some community leaders - approve of the tactic as a deterrent to rising youth violence and teenage murders.

Mr Hogan-Howe has told colleagues he is concerned at the number of black people being stopped in London despite having done nothing wrong.
