Just watched this and all I can say is ...

Oh My F**king God! ... Mark Gatiss you are a GENIUS!

One of my favourite scenes, directly relevant to Steven Moffat saying that you MUST have a great beginning to draw people in, was the opening sequence, with Sherlock arriving at 221B Baker Street, bloodied and carrying a spear.

The first positive sign which he gave me of the direction which his investigation was taking was an extraordinary one. He had gone out before breakfast, and I had sat down to mine, when he strode into the room, his hat upon his head and a huge barbed-headed spear tucked like an umbrella under his arm.

"Good gracious, Holmes!" I cried. "You don't mean to say that you have been walking about London with that thing?"

Old Canon: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The first positive sign which he gave me of the direction which his investigation was taking was an extraordinary one. He had gone out before breakfast, and I had sat down to mine, when he strode into the room, his hat upon his head and a huge barbed-headed spear tucked like an umbrella under his arm.

"Good gracious, Holmes!" I cried. "You don't mean to say that you have been walking about London with that thing?"

New Canon: Mark Gatiss

Sherlock: Well that was tedious

John: You went on the tube like that?

Sherlock: None of the cabs would take me

- The Hounds of Baskerville, Sherlock Series 2 Episode 2

However, there is quite a contrast between Conan Doyle's immaculately turned out and presented dapper Victorian gentleman Holmes, and the bloodied Sherlock that appears at the inner door of their shared flat, completely surprising John.
