The London Evening Standard Theatre Awards will be given out today (Sunday 20 November) at a ceremony at the Savoy Hotel. The full list of awards and nominees is here:

The big story of the Awards for me is that Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller are going head to head against eachother in the Best Actor category for the dual roles they played in Frankenstein (as the Creature and as Victor Frankenstein).

For me, if there is any justice in the world, the Award should go to Benedict Cumberbatch, as his playing of the Creature (which was the main role in this production) was a more intelligent interpretation of the novel and the play than Jonny Lee Miller's. Take a look at the photo above if you want to see what I mean. Jonny's Creature is aggressive, menacing and threatening. Benedict's Creature has real pathos in his eyes. When I look at the above image of Benedict's Creature I feel that his eyes are saying "Why did you create me only to abandon me?". It is deeply moving. I much prefer the image of Benedict's Creature and what Benedict is conveying in his eyes to that of Jonny's. Jonny played the Creature as a child in a man's body (an infant), Benedict played the Creature as an adult who had had his brains blown out and was relearning everything from scratch. I much prefered Benedict's interpretation. Benedict also gave 500% each time he played the Creature.

However, it is perfectly possible that Benedict will miss out, not to Jonny, but to the other Actors nominated in this category.

In the other categories where I have a strong opinion, I really fervently believe that again, if there is any justice in the world, best play just HAS to go to One Man, Two Guvnors by Richard Bean. It is genius and, without a shadow of a doubt, the best night out that can be had at the London theatre. It therefore also deserves to win the viewer/audience voted Best Night Out Award.

Finally, the Best Musical, again if there is any justice in the world, just has to go to London Road. The music and the songs in this new musical are outstanding and it was a completely new, innovative and fresh take on the musical. In my humble opinion, there is no contest in this category - the award just HAS to go to London Road!

The more observant amongst you will notice that every single production I am promoting and backing is by the National Theatre. I admit - I am a tad biased!

Matthew 25: 34-40

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
