Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy premieres at the BFI Southbank

I am FINALLY going to have to talk about that film ie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (TTSS). It had its London premiere at the BFI Southbank today. I am afraid I was not there - I was at the Globe watching Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. You cannot beat a play about selling your soul to the Devil!

Anyway, that means I cannot review TTSS so I will leave it up to those I trust 100% - Empire and the Telegraph. Both gave it 5 stars so I think I am in the real minority here at just not being that bothered about this film!

Firstly, what is the film about? Cut and pasted from Empire:
London, the 1970s: After a fiasco of a covert operation, British Intelligence spymaster Control (Hurt) and his right-hand man George Smiley (Oldman) are sacked. Then shocking but persuasive information that a Soviet mole has penetrated to the heart of the secret service prompts the Whitehall wallahs to task Smiley with spying on the spies.

How can you not be bothered when there are so many great British actors involved? I think I would watch almost anything with this cast! :-)))

Seriously, it really helped that I remember all the praise for the old BBC television series, although I admit that I didn't bother to watch it myself at the time. Having seen it all on dvd at last, I'm now really looking forward to seeing the characters as played by the new team. You know that there is already talk about making a follow up film (whether The Honourable Schoolboy or Smiley's People I know not) but that would have to involve Benedict with Gary Oldman again...

You are quite right - the cast says it all about this film. I will see it sometime over the next week and I am sure I will be raving about it when I - finally! - get round to seeing it.

I think that when you go to TTSS, you are going to absolutely love it. It's not just Cold War spying – the consequences for each character are extremely personal. Love, loyalty, trust, loss, betrayal, friendship, duty, double-crossing... it's all there. I'm championing this film to the hilt and I don't even know when I'll get to see it! :-)))

"Love, loyalty, trust, loss, betrayal, friendship, duty, double-crossing... it's all there."

Now you have sold it to me ... where's my coat?!

Just realised - it is not out until tomorrow, when I am working and walking. Sod's law. Benedict, Tom et al will have to wait!

I'm going to have to wait too, but will try to get to a showing sometime in the second half of next week. :-))
