Underworld, Clapham Common, Saturday 27 August 2011

Underworld played Clapham Common today as part of the South West Four Weekender.

Basically, I decided after this that I was not going to bother going to any more Festivals. I am too old! They are expensive. It had rained all day so the Common was a mud bath. The Common itself, which is normally beautiful and peaceful green public space, was trashed with beer cans, plastic glasses and litter. Drugs were openly being sold and taken. Alcohol was flowing like water. People were there not for Underworld but to do drink and drugs and have a merry time. It was not for me!

I have seen Underworld at venues like the Roundhouse and I much preferred that. No drugs. Drinking in moderation. And people who were genuine fans of Underworld and were there to dance to the music. At those types of venues, with that type of crowd, once Underworld get going they can get everyone to move along to the beat as one body/mass in time with the banging bass. It is an amazing communal experience. I didn't feel that they were able to deliver that here - it was not their fault.

So goodbye to Festivals!
