This is one of the most insightful and intelligent pieces of writing I have read about the recent riots in London and throughout the UK. I agree 100%.

Thank you for posting this thought provoking letter. It is certainly true that whilst the recent riots caught the headlines, week in week out, anti-social behaviour and serious crime has been blighting city centres for decades, creating generations of dispossessed. To make examples of the current perpetrators solves nothing in the long term. The Government ought to be paying attention to those people who have long-term knowledge and experience, and who can work within communities. In a time of cutbacks however, I don't hold out much hope in the short term for the necessary open-ended funding of suitable projects. With the rest of the news about fat cat financiers lining their own nests, corrupt police/politicians/journalists/whatever, it's enough to make me want to throw a few bricks around too! I fear things are going to get worse before they get better in bankrupt Britain. :-/

Well as you know, I have decided to join the struggle!

I actually want to have a go at giving young people their dignity and self-respect back. To give them hope, a quality education and proper employment opportunities. If they had these things, they would not feel alienated and dispossessed, and they would not be rioting and looting on the streets of London.

It's a very laudable goal, and I hope you can find a way to help. In the short term, whilst you're looking around for something more permanent, probably volunteering would be a good way to go. I wish you lots of luck with the endeavour. :-)
